Donate it (if it is still usable)
A clean, undamaged mattress can be donated. Calgary charities such as Women in Need Thrift Stores and the Calgary Drop-In Centre may accept one, call ahead, as each has its own condition rules and none can take anything stained or damaged.
Sell it or give it away
If there is still life in it, list it on Facebook Marketplace or offer it to family or friends. Free listings tend to move quickly, and it keeps a good mattress out of the landfill.
Recycle it
Re-Matt, a local Calgary mattress recycler, breaks mattresses down into steel, foam, and fabric instead of landfilling them (drop-off fees apply). Some retailers will also haul your old mattress away when they deliver a new one, ask at the time of purchase.
Dispose of it at a City Eco Centre
A worn-out mattress can be dropped at a City of Calgary Eco Centre, where a disposal fee applies. You will need a vehicle that can carry it, and you handle the loading and unloading yourself.
