Tires Are Not Garbage, But Recycling Them Is Free
Tires cannot go in your black cart or to the landfill in Calgary. The good news is that Alberta has recycled tires for decades, and the recycling fee was already paid when you bought them, so dropping off used tires is free. Here is where they go.
Your options
Where Tires Go in Calgary
Drop Them Free at a Tire Retailer or Collection Site
Alberta's tire recycling program accepts used tires free of charge at hundreds of collection sites across the province, and many tire shops take them too. There is no fee, because it was paid when the tire was bought.
Use a City Eco Centre
City Eco Centres recycle tires free, up to 12 per day. Place them in the cages provided rather than leaving them on the ground, and they head straight into the recycling stream.
Let your installer take the old ones
When you buy new tires, the shop will usually take your old ones for recycling at the same time. If you are already replacing them, this is the simplest option of all.
Never dump or burn them
Tires do not belong in your cart, in the landfill, or on a fire. Free recycling is always available, so there is never a reason to dump or burn an old tire.
One honest note
Tires on Their Own vs. Part of a Cleanout
Straight answer: we can pick up tires, they carry a disposal charge, because tires need special recycling rather than the landfill, and we always confirm it up front. For just a few tires on their own, a free Alberta drop-off is usually the cheaper route, and we would rather point you to that than have you pay for something you can recycle for nothing.
But if you would rather not make the trip, or the tires are mixed into a garage, shop, or acreage cleanout, we will take them with everything else and confirm the cost before we start. See what we take for the full list, or text a photo to 587-330-5500 for a free quote.
